LYT Outreach Policy

Limerick Youth Theatre (LYT) Outreach has three strands: Recruitment of Members, Projects for Disadvantaged Youth and special initiatives for those under 16 years old.

LYT has a dedicated Outreach Officer, responsible for the following:

Recruitment

  1. LYT offers free drama workshops to school groups and youth and community groups within the target age range (16-23) during the month of September.
  2. LYT advertises Auditions for new members through posters, flyers, press and websites.
  3. LYT shows and productions are targeted at an audience of the same age as members.
  4. LYT keeps an up-to-date website with a regular blog and image gallery about activities.

Projects for Disadvantaged Youth
LYT specifically targets Disadvantaged Youth for membership of LYT. For those young people lacking the confidence to join, projects will be devised and carried out in partnership with youth/community groups in disadvantaged areas.

  1. Outreach Projects are long-term in aim, with a minimum of 10 weeks’ duration.
  2. Outreach Projects are process-based. At the end of the project a small-scale performance, reading, screening of film or display of work may be arranged, but this will not be the focus of the project.
  3. LYT will not stage shows or duplicate its members’ activities at the behest of another group.
  4. Participants on Outreach Projects are expected to abide by the same rules as LYT members regarding attendance and behaviour. LYT reserves the right to drop a participant from an outreach project if they do not comply.
  5. While Outreach Projects have a clear social objective, LYT’s part is to supply the artistic experience and training to the highest possible standards.
  6. Outreach Projects are designed to be meaningful and enjoyable for the participants.
  7. Outreach Projects will be properly supervised and insured by the partner group.
  8. Separate funding is sought for Outreach Projects.
  9. Participants who successfully complete an Outreach Project will be encouraged to join LYT and to pursue further arts education/activity.
  10. Participants on Outreach Projects will be encouraged to meet LYT members and vice-versa. Joint outings and activities will be arranged as appropriate.

Initiatives for under 16
Transition Youth Theatre (TYT) is a special programme designed for transition year students who are interested in theatre. TYT has following purposes:
  1. Create a small theatre company of transition year students from schools across Limerick.
  2. Train the participants, giving them an introduction to the area relevant to their interest (eg; Design/Management/Performance).
  3. Produce a piece of theatre and present it at a professional venue.
  4. Work with students and schools across Limerick and County Limerick to achieve this aim.

The Outreach Officer will work with the Artistic Director to integrate LYT Outreach activities with the Artistic programme.
